What is Wildlife Sanctuary ?

Wildlife Sanctuaries are started as game reserve for hunting wild animals and exploiting forest produce in India. Ancient time there was regular conflict between forest dwellers and urban communities on forest produces, water sources and land. Later when kingdoms were established, the forest around the kingdom was declared as government property and imposed restrictions over its rights. The earliest of its record is from Arthasastra written by Chanakya (3-BC). The same system continued during British Period, facilitating the British Government and business houses to exploit forest resources. Even after independence governments continued the same policy till 1970s. Later during the rule of Indira Gandhi, that the government established sanctuaries for the conservation, other than exploitation. Major objectives of establishing a forest as Wildlife sanctuaries are.

1.For conserving natural conditions that are necessary to protect nationally significant species,

2.Bbiotic communities

3. Physical features of the environment.
