Munnar , as a township , was established and developed by British tea planters in late 20th centaury. Since the area shows significant megalithic monuments , it is undoubtedly , a centre of culture in ancient time. It was a hub in ancient trade route between Kongunad and Elamalais. In late 20th century the British planters hired the land from the then King of the region for tea plantation. There are few monuments like CSI Church, Early tea factory, Planters club, Free Mason lodge , Churchill bridge , Margret Bridge etc are still existing from Colonial period. .

What the plantations offer
Munnar is characterised by mist filled tea valleys and hills. Munnar has the largest stretch of tea plantations in South India, bordered with high peaks and forests. The tea plantations belongs to different tea companies. Kolukkumalai is the highest tea plantation in South India, offers tea factory visit. The Tata tea company who hold majority of the plantations offers a tea museum for tourists. The Thalayar Tea Company offers tea factory visit and tea bungalow accommodation for tourists.
