Kabini is the name of a river flowing through the South east of Nagarhole National Park in Karnataka, forming a common boundary between Nagarhole, Bandipur and Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary. The Kabini Reservoir, formed after the construction of a dam provide source of water and food for the animals throughout the year. Since it is the backdrop for rich biodiversity, it became a grand niche for the breeding of different life forms including Asiatic elephants, Tiger, leopard , winter bids etc. It is absorbing a good number of thriving big cats population by providing ample supply of food and habitat. Most of the jungle resorts are located in the reservoir area of the Kabini reservoir. The faunal diversity of Kabni from its healthy ecosystem makes it as one of the big cat’s habitat in the world. The density of ungulates in the area is ranging from 35 to 42 per sqkm. This offers sufficient food for big cats through out the year. More over , comparatively less populated and undisturbed forest tract of Nilgiri offers comfortable home range for Tigers. Gaur and Sambar deer are the major prey of Tiger and are plenty in the area. Since more adaptable in nature Panthers, it is very common to found along the safari track.
